Section 01Our commitment
We want everyone to be able to use this website and enjoy a night at the Tornado Room — including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, need larger text, or find motion on screen difficult.
Accessibility is not something we finish and tick off. If something here does not work for you, we want to hear about it, and we will fix it.
Section 02The standard we aim for
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That is the standard most commonly referenced for websites in the United States.
We say “aim to meet” deliberately. No site is perfectly accessible, and claiming otherwise helps nobody. We build to the standard, we test against it, and we fix what we find.
Section 03What we have done
This site was built with accessibility in mind rather than added on afterwards. Specifically:
- Colour contrast on text meets or exceeds the AA threshold, and colour is never the only way we convey meaning.
- Everything works by keyboard. You can reach every link, button, and form field with Tab, and a visible outline always shows where you are.
- Headings are structured in order, so screen reader users can navigate by heading rather than reading every word.
- Images have alt text where they carry meaning, and are marked decorative where they do not.
- Forms have real labels, not just placeholder text, and errors are announced next to the field they belong to with instructions for fixing them.
- Motion respects your settings. If your device is set to reduce motion, our animations stop and background video does not load or play.
- Tap targets are large enough to hit comfortably on a phone, and text resizes without the layout breaking.
Section 04Known limitations
We would rather tell you where the gaps are than pretend there are none.
- The map is embedded from Google and we do not control how accessible it is. Our full address is always written out as text beside it, and you can call us for directions.
- The background video on our homepage is decorative. It has no sound and carries no information you need — it does not load at all if your device requests reduced motion or is saving data.
Section 05Visiting the restaurant
The building matters more than the website for most people, so here is what to expect when you get here.
- Entrance: [STEP-FREE, OR DESCRIBE THE STEP AT THE DOOR]
- Restroom: [IS THERE AN ACCESSIBLE RESTROOM? WHERE IS IT?]
- Parking: [ACCESSIBLE PARKING NEARBY, AND HOW FAR THE WALK IS]
- Seating: [ROOM BETWEEN TABLES, AND WHETHER THERE IS ACCESSIBLE-HEIGHT SEATING]
- The patio: [REACHABLE WITHOUT STAIRS?]
- Service animals are always welcome.
If you are not sure whether the room will work for you, call us at (651) 390-1342 before you come. We would rather tell you exactly what to expect than have you arrive and find out.
Section 06Tell us about a problem
If any part of this website or our restaurant is difficult for you to use, contact us and tell us what happened. It helps us to know the page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive technology you were using — but do not worry if you do not have those details.
- Phone: (651) 390-1342
- Email: [email protected]
- In person: 324 S Main St, Stillwater, MN 55082
We aim to respond within 2 business days. If you need help with something immediately — a reservation question, directions, ordering — call us and a person will help you on the phone.
Section 07Ongoing work
We review this site as we add pages and change things. When we find something that falls short, we fix it and update this page.
